Wild Wanderers in the Wind: Blow, Wind, Blow by Dom Conlon and Anastasia Izlesou

Looking at the wide world is indeed fascinating. If we are living in city or countryside, we are surrounded by nature with its’ infinite beauty and variety. It touches us all and a lot of the time, we don’t even realise. Take the wind, for example…it blows gentle or harsh and effects everyone, everything it touches. But we don’t often think about the wind that way, do we? The third in the Wild Wanderers series of picturebooks is set to change that….

“Lawn-prowler, mist-parter, like a cat on the hunt…”

So begins this atmospheric journey across the globe, as we chase the wind. Or does it chase us? We can’t be sure. It starts out small and weak, building it’s strength as it moves along it’s way. Like a song, a poem, it takes on new faces, new characteristics, telling it’s story everywhere it goes. Tossing the clothes on the line, scattering leaves, helping us to make flour, fly kites, go up, up, up in a hot air balloon, scattering seeds; blowing cold and hot, calm and stormy…and we can’t stop it. But we can enjoy and understand its’ many personalities…..

The beautiful, poetic language in this book allows the extraordinary story to sing its’ way into our hearts, reflecting all the drama and intricate wonder of the blowing wind. It tells a story that ignites the imagination and fascinates; makes us believe that the wind is really like a person; a character we can relate to. More than that, it works in information, the facts and it tells its’ tale. And there is a wonderful page of “Wind Facts” at the end, as well. Easy for even the youngest to grasp and adding to their storehouse of natural world knowledge. The changing rhythm and cadence, as it rocks and lulls creates a spell-binding sensation, making it easy to read and remember…and to love.

And the illustrations! Lush and rich with colour and vibrancy, each one created with its’ specific page in mind, they add such texture, movement and life to the language…honestly, they should be framed and hanging in a gallery. The details they hold pull your eye into and along the path of the story, encouraging the reader to turn the page and discover new intrigues and episodes. Even the end pages are gorgeous, sumptuous, fabric-like…and just perfect for the book.

Extraordinary, filled with life and wonder, this is a marvelous book to share with children, bringing an understanding of this mysterious phenomenon, adding to their command of language and taking them on a magical journey. Simply enchanting in every way.

I really must thank Graffeg Ltd, and especially Bethan for bringing this beautiful book, and in fact the entire series into my life. There will be 12 books in the series. (The next one will be Shine, Star, Shine…and I think it may just be my book.) But…read them all! https://graffeg.com/products/blow-wind-blow
